Stewardship

Ideally each CLCT property has at least two stewards. One is a Board member; the other is a volunteer from our membership.

Stewards check their assigned properties to determine their condition and ascertain what needs to be done to preserve them (e.g., mowing fields, removing invasive plants) and to conserve the nature resources they contain, including plant and animal life. Stewards also take a leadership role in facilitating the use of the properties by visitors by identifying boundaries, designing and marking trails, and recommending to the Board tasks for work parties.

Volunteering as a property steward is an excellent way in which members may become involved with CLCT that requires only a modest commitment of time yet affords tangible results with recognition of contribution.

For the larger preserves, CLCT seeks professionally prepared land management plans. These plans will lead the stewards in recommending to the Board goals and action plans appropriate for each property or section. Implementation may extend over years and may require considerable resources, both volunteer time (not just that of the stewards!) and funds for professional activity such as surveying or selective logging.
